Smiling Peanut, an upstart independent film production company based in Fort Collins, Colorado, announced today their annual sponsorship of OpenStage Theatre & Company‘s 31st anniversary season, “Thrills, Chills and Belly Laughs.” Beginning with the season’s inaugural production of Agatha Christie’s “Murder at the Vicarage,” Smiling Peanut Productions will be annually contributing funds to the further development of OpenStage’s tradition of producing exciting live entertainment in northern Colorado. The 2003-2004 season marks the beginning of the fourth decade in which OpenStage has been producing theatre in Colorado.

Smiling Peanut President Chris Lanphear and Vice President Jake Theisen are both active members of OpenStage Theatre and have contributed to the company both on-stage and off. Their personal relationships with OpenStage began in late 2001 when Chris Lanphear served as Assistant Director of Lanford Wilson’s “The HOT L Baltimore,” directed by OpenStage alum Richard Strahle.

“We are incredibly proud of our personal associations with OpenStage, its directors and vast array of members,” said Chris Lanphear. “It is through this valuable relationship that we have come to know so many diverse, talented people as collaborators, artists, and friends.”

Cancellation of BLACK BALLOON

Posted by | Press Releases | No Comments

Due to unforeseen problems, production of the film BLACK BALLOON, the first in-house Smiling Peanut production, which was slated to begin in June 2003, has been indefinitely postponed.

Questions regarding this decision may be directed to myself or my partner, Jake Theisen. Believe me, no one regrets this situation more than I do, and I truly thank those of you who have already contributed to the project.

Don’t fret, as Smiling Peanut is actively pursuing new projects, including Chas Kangas’ Electric Speckled Love Machine (featured in Too Much Coffee Man Magazine) as well as the feature film CASUAL FRIDAY. We’ve also teamed up with OpenStage Theatre & Company to launch a new effort, Rabbit Hole Radio (www.rabbitholeradio.com), which is coming to a radio station near you soon. And in early 2004, SPP will once again join with Troma Entertainment to present the TromaDance Film Festival!

Please continue to keep in touch with is via our website, www.smilingpeanut.com. Again, those of you with questions may reach myself or Jake using the information below.

We’re not going anywhere. Fear the Peanut!

Very Truly,

Chris Lanphear, President
Smiling Peanut

Smiling Peanut Teams with Troma Entertainment for 2003 TromaDance Film Festival

Posted by | Press Releases | No Comments

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 23, 2002
Fort Collins, CO & New York, NY

Smiling Peanut, an upstart independent film production company based in Fort Collins, Colorado, is teaming with Troma Entertainment, the world’s oldest independent film studio for the 4th Annual TromaDance Film Festival the week of January 20, 2003.

What Is TromaDance?

TromaDance is the first film festival wholeheartedly devoted to filmmakers and fans. Unlike every other film festival, TromaDance does not charge filmmakers to submit their films. Entrance to all screenings is free and open to the public. Also, there are no VIP reservations or preferential treatment regarding films, panels, or parties of any kind given. The organizers of TromaDance believe films are meant to be seen, especially when it comes to new filmmakers. Artin all its forms is for the people!

TromaDance features a range of films made independently, usually without big stars, big money and far removed from the Hollywood studio system. The official selections of TromaDance have been made with nothing more than passion, courage, integrity, and raw talent.

Everyone at TromaDance is treated as an equal. The elite and the celebrated are treated no better or worse than the experimental filmmaker or the random moviegoer off the street. Admittance to all screenings, panels, parties, and events is strictly on a first come, first served basis. If there are any VIPs at TromaDance, they are the filmmakers whose blood, sweat, and hard work are on the screen.

TromaDance is an opportunity for everyone who’s ever picked up a camera to have their work seen without the compromises required by elitist cartel interference. TromaDance is proud to be the first and only film festival of the people, for the people, and by the people.

SP At The Festival

Smiling Peanut will be crashing into Utah to work with Troma in promoting TromaDance as well as to promote the upcoming STAN IN YOUR CORNER, an SP development directed by Allegory Dalton, and BLACK BALLOON, the first in-house script from SPP that is currently in pre-production.

Smiling Peanut and Troma?

Earlier this year, SP co-founder and President Chris Lanphear, was commissioned by Troma co-founder Lloyd Kaufman to create and design the remake of the hugely popular www.toxicavenger.com website. Lanphear has been working for Troma for several years as a webmaster for several of Troma’s websites, including www.tromamovies.com.

Look for the Smiling Peanut and Troma Team to raise hell in Utah during the 2003 TromaDance Film Festival! For more on TromaDance, make sure to visit www.tromadance.com. We hope to see you there!

Troma Entertainment is celebrating its 29th Anniversary as a creator and distributor of brand-name independent films such as THE TOXIC AVENGER, TROMEO & JULIET, and CLASS OF NUKE ‘EM HIGH. Troma films have been honored by retrospectives sponsored by the Cinematheque Francaise, the British Film Institute, and the American Film Institute among others. Troma is aggressively expanding its film library, which currently contains approximately 1000 titles and is actively developing future feature film projects.
